Severe Weather Policy

When weather impacts service, ART has three levels of service:

Limited: Modified routes with some delays in service.

Severe: Service on ART 41, 51, 77 and 87 (no 87X) will be provided with delays. Routes will be modified to avoid hills and narrow side streets. It is likely that all other ART routes will be cancelled. This service level will be used if the Federal Government is closed.

Please note that in severe weather:

  • ART 41 will not serve Columbia Heights West. Buses will run only to and from Columbia Pike and Dinwiddie.
  • ART 51 will only operate between Ballston Metro and 19th St. to serve the hospital.
  • ART 77 will not serve S. Courthouse Rd. and will not serve Walter Reed between Arlington Mill and S. Glebe where the hill is.
  • ART 87 buses will run the full route, but expect delays. ART 87X will not run.

No Service: Routes are cancelled due to hazardous road conditions.

Please note that routes may be operating on different levels of service depending on road and traffic conditions. The table below gives more information on how the levels of service will impact each route.

Metrobus

Visit the Metrobus Snow Service web page to get information about Metrobus service in Arlington during moderate and heavy snowfall conditions.

Look for the Snowflake!

Bus stops that are in operation during severe weather conditions will have a blue snowflake decal (similar to the snowflake to the left) in the upper corner of the bus stop flag. Bus stops in service during severe conditions are only along the ART 41, 51, 77 and 87 routes. Not all bus stops along those routes will be in service.

Below is a chart which provides a shorthand description of what “Limited” and “Severe” mean for each ART Bus Route. Route descriptions are subject to change due to unexpected road and traffic conditions. Snow route maps are available as PDF files. About Portable Document Format (PDF).
