Severe Weather Policy

When Weather Affects ART Service

A major snowstorm or weather related event is challenging, but it always seems to bring out the best in people. At Arlington Transit, we pledge to give you our best, providing the finest service we can. And that includes timely, accurate information.

Bus service depends on road conditions. During a storm, we post ART bus service changes on arlingtontransit.com and 703-228-RIDE customer information phone number. We will also send out ART Alerts to Email and SMS enabled mobile phone and PDA subscribers.

In general the ART bus routes are designed to serve the local neighborhoods, while Metrobus serves the main lines. The ART buses are therefore more likely to travel on hills or narrow side streets and so may be the first to be affected during inclement weather. So please stay informed and be prepared.

Metrobus

Visit the Metrobus Snow Service web page to get information about Metrobus service in Arlington during moderate and heavy snowfall conditions.

ART Alert

The ART Alert system provides real-time information about service disruptions at the top of most pages of this Web site. You can also sign up to have alerts sent to your email address or wireless device. Find out more.

Weather-Related Service Levels

When weather impacts service, ART - Arlington Transit has three levels of service operation:

  • Limited: Modified Routes / Some Delays In Service
  • Severe: Greatly Modified Routes / Limited Service / Expect Delays (some routes could be cancelled)
  • No Service: Route Canceled

Please note: Routes may be operating on different levels of service depending on road and traffic conditions.

Look for the snowflake

Bus stops that are in operation during severe weather conditions will have a blue snowflake decal (similar to the snowflake to the left) in the upper corner of the bus stop flag. Bus stops in service during severe conditions are only along the ART 41, 51, 75 and 77 routes. Not all bus stops along those routes will be in service.

Below is a chart which provides a shorthand description of what “Limited” and “Severe” mean for each ART Bus Route. Route descriptions are subject to change due to unexpected road and traffic conditions. Snow route maps are available as PDF files. About Portable Document Format (PDF).
