Dump the Pump Day

May 31, 2011

The 6th annual National Dump the Pump Day will be held on Thursday, June 16. On this day, leave your car at home and instead ride public transit to get to where you need to go.
With gas prices on the rise, riding public transit is one of the quickest ways to beat high gas prices. The latest Transit Savings Report from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) shows that a two person household that downsizes to one car can save – on the average – more than $10,000 a year. That’s a lot of money!
Nervous about leaving your car at home for a day? Going car free or car lite in Arlington is easier then you may think. First, visit commuterpage.com to learn about all of your transit options. Chances are there’s an ART bus stop, Metrobus stop, Metrorail or VRE station near where you live. You may need to take a combination of transit options (ex. ART bus to a Metro station) to get to where you need to go.
Both ART and Metro have several online tools that you can use on your computer or smartphone to take the guess work out of riding transit. Create your own personalized bus schedule, find out where the closest bus stop is and when the next bus will arrive.
Next, visit the Car-Free Diet website to get tips for going car free or car lite. Check out the Car-Free Diet Calculator to see how much money you can save, calories you’ll burn and CO2 emissions you’ll reduce when you go on the Car-Free Diet. You can also read about our Car Free Diet Skeptics and how they went from being totally car dependent to true believers in the car-free lifestyle.
Other car-free options for getting around include biking and walking. BikeArlington.com and WalkArlington.com are great resources to learn more about the numerous trails in Arlington and where they can take you.
Once you have all the information you need, dump the pump on June 16 and try going car free for a day. Who knows, you may enjoy leaving your car at home and want to do it more often!
