New ART Stop Finder for Smartphones

October 29, 2010

Wondering where the nearest ART stop is, but not sure how to find out? Smartphone users can now download a new tool called Layar that allows them to look through their phone as if they were going to take a picture, and see superimposed information about their surroundings:

• The location of ART bus stops, with a link to ART RealTime Arrival info
• Capital Bikeshare locations and bike/dock availability
• Points of interest on WalkArlington Walkabouts routes

Layar uses a combination of the phone’s camera, compass and GPS data to identify the user’s location, retrieve useful data about the user’s surroundings, and overlay that information over the camera view. Users will then see Arlington from a whole new perspective.

This free tool is currently available for iPhones (3GS and newer) and Android mobile devices. Phones must have an internet connection, camera, GPS and compass to be able to use Layar. Download Layar at www.layar.com and then search under “Arlington” or “Transportation” to find the layers for ART, Capital Bikeshare, and WalkArlington
