Ballston Station Multimodal Study
Arlington County Department of Environmental Services and Metro have initiated a conceptual study to improve the Ballston Metro plaza and the operation of nearby streets. Although the Metro station area is active and provides many transportation options, these very conditions – in its current configuration – diminish safety and circulation.
The Ballston Station Multimodal Study will identify, analyze, and recommend enhancements that will encourage safer and smoother pedestrian and transit circulation and will improve the design of the plaza for all users.
The study began in Spring 2010 with a data collection and analysis phase. Concept development and evaluation will occur during Summer 2010. In Fall 2010, a preferred concept will be selected, and the study will be complete by the end of 2010.

Study Goals
- Goal: Increase traffic safety, particularly for vulnerable user

• Objective: Enhance bus passenger amenities - Goal: Enhance the design and increase the use of public spaces

• Objective: Increase user comfort - Goal: Provide sustainable infrastructure
• Objective: Enhance the attractiveness of transportation choices
• Objective: Provide for low impact development, where possible
