Additional Information about the Proposed ART 55 Route

October 1, 2015

Update: The WMATA Board of Directors approved replacing the Arlington portion of the Metrobus 3A route with the ART 55 route. The new ART 55 route will start service on Sunday, December 13. The FAQ has been updated to reflect this change. (PDF)

We’ve received a lot of feedback and questions about Arlington Transit’s proposal to take over a portion of the Metrobus 3A route and wanted to provide more detailed information about the proposed ART 55 route.

The goals of the new ART service are to provide more reliable bus service along Lee Highway between East Falls Church Metro and Rosslyn Metro, adding more frequent midday and weekend service while lowering the County’s operating costs, since ART service is less expensive to operate than Metrobus.

The proposed ART 55 service would serve the same bus stops in Arlington as the 3A and operate the same days and hours.

After receiving feedback from residents, Arlington Transit tweaked the proposed schedule so that the ART 55 would provide service every 12 minutes during weekday peak periods – the same level of service the 3A provides today. Planned service also includes:

  • Every 15 minutes midday (compared to every 30 minutes for the 3A)
  • Every 20 minutes during the day on Saturday (compared to every 30 minutes for the 3A)
  • Every 30 minutes nights and Sundays (compared to every hour on Sunday for the 3A)

Additional information about proposed rush hour service, transfer options and the ability to handle passenger loads can be found in our frequently asked questions (PDF).

If the proposal to replace the 3A is approved by the WMATA Board of Directors, expected in November, ART 55 would start service on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015.

Arlington Transit will continue to provide information about the proposed ART 55 route and post any news regarding the replacement of the 3A on the ART website.
